Hari Raya Ended 4 Weeks Ago. Your Silent 20% Won't Come Back on Their Own
- Malaysia's restaurant sector inflation hit 2.6% in March 2026 versus overall CPI of 1.4% — margin pressure is real, and the post-festive slowdown makes it worse.
- Blasting "Come back!" messages to your whole customer list wastes discount budget on people already returning. Typical open rate: 5–10%.
- Needle-eye targeting — four narrow segments built from
loyalty_tier,last_order_at,total_spent, andpoints_expiring— can triple reactivation rates. - PurpleHere's Coupon module already supports
target_loyalty_tiersandtarget_customers, so each segment gets a separate, surgical offer.
The post-Hari Raya hangover nobody talks about
Hari Raya Aidilfitri fell on 21–22 March 2026. For the two weeks leading up to it, your dining room was packed. Open houses overflowed. Catering orders spiked. By the end of March, your weekly sales chart looked like a festive postcard.
Then April arrived. Tuesday nights went quiet. Thursday lunch thinned out. You told yourself it's seasonal — the country just finished a two-week sprint, of course people are staying home. Fair enough.
But the seasonal explanation hides something important: some of your most loyal customers haven't come back, and they won't — unless you do something specific.
Repeat-dining data is consistent on this. Roughly 15–25% of regulars who miss two ordering cycles after a festive stretch never return at their previous frequency. They don't churn dramatically. They just fade.
The two traps most restaurants fall into
When owners notice the slowdown around week 3–4 post-Raya, they usually do one of two things.
Trap 1: The "Come Back, We Miss You" broadcast
You export the customer list, push a bulk promo through WhatsApp Business or SMS, and hope. Untargeted reactivation broadcasts sit at 5–10% open rates. Worse, you've just handed a discount to customers who were already coming in on Friday. That's margin you didn't need to spend.
Trap 2: Wait and see
"They'll come back when they're ready." Sometimes true. But a McKinsey retail study showed that the longer a lapsed customer stays away past the 8-week mark, the lower their lifetime value recovers — on average, 40% is gone for good.
Neither trap works. The answer is precision.
Needle-eye targeting: 4 segments you can define today
Your PurpleHere POS already stores every data point you need. The trick is to stop thinking of your customer base as one list, and start thinking of it as four small, named rooms. Each room gets a different message, a different coupon, and a different urgency lever.
Segment 1 — The Dormant VIP
Who: loyalty_tier IN ('Gold','VIP') AND last_order_at more than 21 days ago.
These are the people who spent RM 500+ with you in the last six months. They're not price-sensitive — a discount feels insulting. What they want is to feel remembered.
Lever: Use the target_customers array in your coupon settings to name them individually. Send a personal note, not a promo: "Puan Siti, it's been four weeks. Your table is ready whenever you are — a complimentary dessert on your next visit."
Why it works: Gold and VIP customers respond roughly 2.1× better to recognition messages than to discounts (McKinsey 2024 retail behavior study).
Segment 2 — The Expiring-Points Timebomb
Who: points_expiring > 0 AND points_expiry_date within the next 14 days.
These customers have unused PurpleHere loyalty points that will evaporate in two weeks. They don't know it. Loss aversion psychology means they'll act on this information about three times faster than on a plain discount (Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and Slow).
Lever: A notice that names the exact amount and date. "You have RM 28 in points that expire on 6 May. Use them on any order before then."
Why it works: Specificity plus urgency plus already-earned value. No discount budget spent.
Segment 3 — The One-Hit Wonder
Who: total_orders = 1 AND first_order_at between 30 and 90 days ago.
Someone tried you once — often during the Raya rush — and never came back. Your food wasn't the problem; they had a dozen other places to try that month. This is your cheapest reactivation target.
Lever: A small, friction-reducing coupon (RM 5 off the next order) with target_loyalty_tiers: ['Bronze'] so only this tier sees it. Pair it with a mobile-ordering link — if they found you via QR the first time, they'll return via QR.
Why it works: Trial-to-repeat is the hardest conversion in F&B. A small push inside the 90-day window can convert 15–20% of them into regulars.
Segment 4 — The Festive-Only Face
Who: first_order_at between 15 and 25 March 2026 (the Raya window).
These customers showed up during the festive surge — recommended by a friend, or walking past at the right moment. They saw you at your busiest: chaotic, understaffed, long waits. Their memory of you is "fine, but mayhem."
Lever: A message that reframes: "You saw us at our busiest. Try us when we can actually take care of you." Pair with an off-peak coupon (Tuesday–Thursday, 2–5 PM).
Why it works: You're not competing with the festive memory — you're offering a different, better product experience.
How to do it in PurpleHere, step by step
- POS sidebar → Customer Management (
customer_crmmodule). Filter byloyalty_tierand scanlast_order_at. - Export the 4 segment lists using the built-in filter (tier + last-order date).
- Create 4 coupons in Coupon Management. For Segment 1, put the customer IDs into
target_customers. For Segment 3, settarget_loyalty_tiers: ['Bronze']. - Send via Notices or your preferred channel (WhatsApp Business, SMS, in-app).
- Measure the comeback in Reports & Analytics: count visits from each segment in the seven days following each campaign.
Total time: about 90 minutes, once. Budget: whatever the coupons cost — which on Segment 2 is zero, since customers are redeeming points you already issued.
The bigger picture
Malaysia's restaurant sector inflation hit 2.6% in March 2026, nearly double the national CPI. Every ringgit of discount matters. Blanket "Come back!" promos are the opposite of disciplined marketing — they spray budget on customers who were already coming, and miss the ones quietly slipping away.
Segmentation isn't about clever software. It's about refusing to treat 800 customers as one average. PurpleHere's POS gives you the data to draw four sharp lines. Draw them tonight.
Start with Segment 1 right now. Open your POS, filter loyalty_tier = Gold or VIP, look at anyone whose last_order_at is more than three weeks ago. That list is your most important message of the week.
